Former Fetish Priest in Nigeria Now a Faithful Latter-Day Saint

Our first appointment with Brother James Olufemi was on a Preparation Day at the Kuto Branch  meetinghouse in Ibadan, Nigeria. At that first meeting his only desire was to understand the teachings in the Book of Mormon and to have a copy of his own. We therefore took advantage of the occasion to share our testimonies about the book and my conversion story. Brother Olufemi then told us he would like to know more and asked if it was possible for him to be baptized. We were surprised at his request and we hurriedly told him the requirements for baptism. Then he said, “I’ve got two wives and am a fetish priest and a very devoted one for that matter.” He asked again, “What do I have to do to be baptized?”

We boldly told him that it depends on him and that we cannot tell him what to do but we told him that he can’t be baptized having two wives or continue his responsibilities as a fetish priest because those acts were not in harmony with the gospel. We promised him a better life with the Savior and His gospel; peace in this life and everlasting peace in the life to come.

He accepted our invitation to listen to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and to give his whole life to the Savior who is mighty and ready to accept anyone that comes to Him through faith, repentance, baptism and reception of the Holy Ghost administered by proper authority. Brother Olufemi James wrote the following:

“I am Olufemi James that follow the Christ as from this time on in which I want to destroy all my shrine and become the Holy Man not Satanic Follower again. I therefore sanction that my shrine be destroyed and from now on I belong to Christ and his church. So be it.” President Ahadjie declares, “We are a living witnesses that this brother has surrendered all he used to be and has become a faithful follower of Jesus Christ.”
