Sacramental Reflection

Sacramental Reflection

Pondering over the Savior’s divine declaration on the cross of Calvary, “it is finished,” which typifies the consummation of his mortal ministry, my thoughts were redirected to the day he instituted the sacrament with his Apostles in the upper room.

According to Saint Matthew, Jesus Christ demonstrated his love for mankind by instituting the sacrament to confirm his divine mission on earth.

“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and break it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, take, eat; this is my body.

“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”   Matthew 26:26-28

During the Passover, unleavened bread was eaten for seven days. Leaven, such as yeast, makes bread softer, but also makes it more susceptible to mold and decay. Thus, unleavened bread symbolized purity or a lack of corruption. Most importantly, though, the bread of the sacrament represents the body of Jesus Christ, who said, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35).

At the Last Supper, wine was used to represent the blood of Jesus Christ. Today we use water, but it carries the same meaning (see D&C 27:2).

The Greek word translated as “testament” means “covenant.” In the Passover, the blood of a lamb signified the covenant with Israel. Jesus Christ introduced a new covenant signified by His own blood.

As I carefully meditate upon sacramental prayers being echoed reverently in my heart each Sunday, and partake of the bread and water which has deep significance in my life I have come to realize that being joint heirs with Christ, as apostle Paul said, is an opportunity for me to behave and act as the Savior taught.

“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” Romans 8:17

“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together

My faith in the Lord has increased by acting on the promise in the sacrament prayers that assures me of the Spirit as I keep the commandment of the Lord.

And I have also found peace by qualifying for the companionship of the Holy Ghost through prayer, fasting, and searching the scriptures diligently. I know my faith will increase I as constantly engage myself in a good course.
